An exceptional French Louis XV mahogany five-drawer commode dating from the late eighteenth century, circa 1780–1800. Rich in character and craftsmanship, the chest features brass drawer mouldings, original brass drop handles, and finely reeded corner plaques. The commode is beautifully proportioned, standing on reeded turned corner pillars that lead to tapering turned legs, each terminating in brass sabot feet. The warm mahogany patina and refined detailing exemplify the quality associated with French furniture of this period. Its most intriguing feature is the white marble top, which was crafted from a reclaimed tombstone or church memorial plaque dating more than a century earlier than the chest itself. This remarkable example of early recycling adds a unique layer of history and provenance, making the piece not only a fine example of Louis XV design but also a fascinating conversation piece.
